Yesterday, Today and Forever

In the final years of my sweet mama’s life she lived alone but she was not alone. She had family and friends that would visit and she had a sweet sister-in-law, Rose, that would visit her and when Rose couldn’t visit, she’d write beautiful poems and stories and mail them to mama. You see even though my mama was dying because of cancer she lived her faith in God in every detail of her life. She was not play-acting, and she was not fake.

My mama had a first-hand encounter with the Living God.  That in her 83 years, He had proven to her time and time again, that He is, who He says He Is. Not a fantasy. He is real and she knew she was going Home to be with Him.

Mama and Rose didn’t have much use for “modern technology,” the personal touch was much more important that “e” mailing. Hearing their voices over the telephone were more real because you could actually hear, the emotion and know exactly how each other felt. There was minimal chance of misunderstanding and if there was you could fix it right then. Of course, face to face contact, is always best. Not virtual contact. Physical contact.

These two precious ladies shared a lifetime of memories together. Mama sat by herself many days remembering her childhood, her mama and her family, who are now gone on to heaven except for one. She’d reminisce about her children and grandchildren and great grands and pray for them day and night. Mama was taught that praying was important and that God answers prayer. Mama and Rose had these things in common.

Today, I sit alone, like mama, and wonder about what else she must have felt in those final years. I know a whole lot of her time was spent praying and reading the Words of her heavenly Father. Yes, she was by herself, but she was not alone.

Mama and Rose were from the “old school,” when life was simple but not without hardship or challenges. They were born in the thirties. It was a time before millennial, there’s a word I’ve recently heard, replacing “baby boomers” I guess. Theirs was a time where neighbors waved at each other and when meeting on the street or in a market would say, “How do?” When you needed help people actually came to your aid. They didn’t have much money but there was lots of love and compassion for others. There were porch swings, which swung in the evenings, picnics on Saturday’s. Baked apple pie shared between neighbors, stories, tall tales, about the big fish that got away, gatherings at barber shops and over back yard gates, lots of children playing hide- n-seek in the neighborhood. They’d catch lightning bugs when dusk fell and the familiar voices of mama or papa yelling, ” It’s supper-time, y’all come in now.”

It was a time when women taught their girls to sew and cross-stitch and embroidery. And men taught their sons to respect women and authority and that your word is your bond.

Yes, times have changed. People were more about family than the instant messages flashed on cell phones of who is killing who with words and weapons across the world…more important than bashing people and promoting hate and more important than the latest fashions in Hollywood and rising stars who fizzle out in just a few short years, and certainly more important than entrainment such as sex, and pornography, murder and lies that are displayed constantly across the television screens and technical devises we spend every ninety minutes checking. Idols of the “modern age.”

Yes the “Good ole days.” Days long gone. My mama’s generation is dying out but their values and standards still hold true. Why, because they are based on God’s word and His Love. Here’s the thing, if we don’t teach our children these values and if we don’t live the way God teaches us to live, then our world is doomed. I was taught not to lie. I was taught to respect my elders. I was taught that life is precious. I was taught that God is not a curse word. And that God is Holy.

Mama is gone now and I miss her more and more each day. One day I’ll be gone too; and the day will come when you will also be gone. What legacy will you leave behind? Will the world you leave behind remember that you made it better because you were here? Will your life be remembered that you passed on what was right from wrong? Even in this “modern age” of technology and in the media of the rampant ravings of madmen, and mad-women? You can still be the difference. Cell phones…instant messages…apps…at least now you can send positive uplifting images and well wishes and God’s word and yes, respect, instantly. Let those be the kinds of messages you send. But remember a hand shake or a hug or a smile felt physically, is still the best way ever to communicate!!

Make your mama proud…Do Good!

And when you are old sitting by yourself you may feel alone…but you are not alone! Times change, but God is the same yesterday, today and forever…when all is said and done, listen to that still small voice he’s calling, “Come home now, it’s supper-time.”

Let your life be lived so bright, that when the lights go out, you will still be shinning! You never know who is watching and is learning from you’re example.

God bless you!

Hebrews 13:1-8 New Living Translation (NLT)

Concluding Words

Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters. Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it! Remember those in prison, as if you were there yourself. Remember also those being mistreated, as if you felt their pain in your own bodies.

Give honor to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery.

Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said,

“I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Do You Love Me

After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter,
“Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.”
“Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.
John 21: New Living Translation (NLT) Footnotes: 21:15 Or more than these others do?
How much do you love, Jesus?
Believer, if Jesus was sitting at your breakfast table and you had just finished eating, and he looked at you and asked, “Do you love me?”
What would you say?
Would you feel uncomfortable, put on the spot, would you hesitate and wonder where he was going with that question?
Or would you without hesitation, give an emphatic, “Yes, Lord, you know I love you.”
Jesus is with you each and every day…whether it is at breakfast or on the go…He is there and he’s asking… “Do you love me?”
He knew Peter and he knew Peter’s heart. He knew Peter loved him…but he wanted to hear Peter say it. Jesus knew that in just a few hours, Peter would deny him. He also knew that when Peter realized what he had done and repented that He would indeed feed his lambs, care for his sheep and would love him to the point of death.
Love is in the air…well at least the pagan celebration of Love…Valentine’s Day… commercial ads, candy, drawings and cards of big red hearts and gifts of flowers…sweetheart’s scurry around for tokens to be given once a year to show how much everyone is loved.
Well not everyone…there are the ones who are lonely and alone…lost lambs so to speak who feel as though no one in the world loves them…
Why am I saying this…
Well because it’s Valentine’s Day of course.
Every year, year in and year out…the “holy days” are celebrated.
Am I being cynical? Maybe, just a little.
Oh yeah back at the table, Jesus said, “Peter, do you love me?”
Peter replies, “Yes Lord, you know I love you.”
Jesus said, “Then feed my lambs.”
Three times Jesus asked Peter the same question. He was trying to get a point across.
If you really, really, really love me then do what I have asked you do.
Jesus is saying the same thing to you and to me today…”If you really, love, me. Do what I’ve asked you to do. Follow me.”

Love God with All Your Soul

And you shall LOVE the LORD your God with ALL your SOUL….Matthew 22:37
What is the soul?
The soul is your essence, the intellect, desires, the will, emotions. It is your personality, commitment, faith, all that makes you God-like, spirit.
Jesus said to love God with all your soul…
He said, ALL, not part, all of it.
When you are moved to compassion seeing a new-baby take its first breath. When you listen to the voice of a prodigy, sing and hit the highest note and you hold your breath hoping they can do it…and you are thrilled beyond belief when they do. It’s as if your soul takes flight. Your soul…
It is like putting all you desires and all you hope for, into your talents and dreams and voilà, you succeed. Your soul soars.
You commit to a project, a career, a person, your word is your bond. You see it through. That’s your soul.
When all Hell breaks loose and your finances and health fail, but you keep your integrity and faith to the end and you will not give up because you know God is with you. That is your soul, your will, your emotions.
On the other hand maybe you have a personality that is not so loving or endearing…you’re abrupt and obnoxious and no one wants to be around you.
Your desires are for self and you will do whatever it takes to have your way…
Then my friend, your soul is sick. It is without substance, there is no light in your soul because your soul is lost and dead.
To Love the Lord Your God with all your soul, you must first know who God is and have Him living in your soul. How can you love Him with all your soul if you don’t even know who He is?
The Jews were taught the Word of God from the time of Moses. They knew what the holy scrolls said because the Rabi’s taught it every Sabbath in the temple. The people taught God’s word to their children, and to their grandchildren. They taught it when they awoke and when they laid down at night. They wrote God’s word on their doorpost and carried it on the frontlets of their heads. They spoke God’s word in their daily tasks. And yet their souls were far from Him. Their hearts were hardened and they turned deaf ears to what it means to, love God will all their soul.
God said,
Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Deuteronomy 11:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
If they had known God they would have known Jesus. God’s word described Jesus exactly. It told in every detail how Jesus would live and die and rise again. They didn’t recognize Him when He came. They only went through the motions. They did not love God with all their soul.
(Pharisees asked)
“Where is your father?” they asked.
Jesus answered, “Since you don’t know who I am, you don’t know who my Father is. If you knew me, you would also know my Father.” John 8:19

Do you know Him?

Do you think about God when you rise and throughout your day and when you lie down to sleep? Do you talk about His goodness and His love? Do you ask Him for direction before you make a decision? Is your soul committed to Him? Do you spend as much time with Him as you do before the television? Are you addicted to your cell phone, scrolling apps or news or social whatever…but if Jesus is mentioned you cringe?
Is your Bible dusty? Do you even know where it is, do you even have a Bible? Not just a mundane, let me get through this because the preacher said to read a passage, kind of reading. Is your soul thirsty, crying out for something, but there’s a great big hole that cannot be filled. You know because you’ve tried to fill it by being a workaholic, or dull your feelings with drugs or with dead lifeless dreams that lead only to the destruction of your soul? Are you tired? Empty? Lonely? Frustrated? Sick? Wandering?
Is your time spent racing cars, writing books, reading materials that are mindless entertainment and that will not prosper your soul…? I’m not saying that these kinds of activities are all wrong but if your soul is drying up because you haven’t loved God first then yes, you will need to do some adjusting in your priorities.
Do you know God?
Do you LOVE God?
You will know because there will be such a longing to be with Him…to study Him, to talk to Him all the time…He will saturate your thoughts and mind and being…He will reveal Himself to you in ways you never imagined…
I don’t want to cause condemnation. Oh no. I just want you to be aware that, to Love God with all your soul…is more than a Sunday morning experience, it’s more than a mini prayer and off you go, to do, whatever it is you do. It is a daily life-sustaining, glorious, adventure…if you see yourself in this post, and want to change, just ask Jesus to give your soul the desire to love Him totally and completely and I promise you, He will.
When you love God with all your soul…He will love your soul right back and more!
As the Psalmist declared in Psalm 23…He restores my soul

The Songs of Christmas

The Songs of Christmas
It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, on a glorious Silent Night,
Joy to the World
As we hear the, First Noel, with Tidings of Comfort and Joy…
O Come All Ye Faithful, Come Let Us Adore Him
O Holy Night, see him there Away in a Manger…
O Little Town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie…
We Three Kings
Come to honor the savior of the world…
Years later others would sing…
Dashing through the Snow, as Jingle Bells were heard,
We’ll have A White Christmas and
Watch Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
Underneath the Christmas Tree.
We’ll Deck the Halls
And enjoy Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, will guide Santa to all the good little boys and girls.
Sitting in Santa’s lap, he’ll hear, All I Want for Christmas…
On the First day of Christmas My true love gave to me, a Partridge in a pear tree, to the twelve drummers drumming, tis a time of merriment…
There’s Frosty the Snowman, a happy, jolly soul…
Do You Hear What I Hear?
While Shepherds Watch, the Little Drummer Boy.
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen—
Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, glory to the new born king!
I’ll Be Home for Christmas, if only in my dreams…
So Have a Holly Jolly Christmas
And everybody sing…
We Wish You a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Throughout our lives we’ve heard these joyful songs
From Up on the House Top to O Holy Night
Always remember the one who gave His life…
Whether a Christmas song, that’s sung
Or a little story told…
History has been given to help us to be bold…
T’was the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring not even a mouse…
Let us rejoice and give glory to God…for…
Christ is Born in Bethlehem
Rejoice, Rejoice Emmanuel…
