All throughout his time with his disciples, Jesus had demonstrated a deep and tender love for them. And now he longed to show them the full measure of his love.<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%2013%3A1-17&amp;version=TPT#fen-TPT-7983a\">a<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>Before their evening meal had begun, the accuser<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%2013%3A1-17&amp;version=TPT#fen-TPT-7984b\">b<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0had already planted betrayal<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%2013%3A1-17&amp;version=TPT#fen-TPT-7984c\">c<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.<\/h6>\n<h6><sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>Now Jesus was fully aware that the Father had placed all things under his control, for he had come from God and was about to go back to be with him.\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>So he got up from the meal and took off his outer robe, and took a towel and wrapped it around his waist.\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples\u2019 dirty feet and dry them with his towel.<\/h6>\n<h6><sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>But when Jesus got to Simon Peter, he objected and said, \u201cI can\u2019t let you wash my dirty feet\u2014you\u2019re my Lord!\u201d<\/h6>\n<h6><sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus replied,\u00a0\u201cYou don\u2019t understand yet the meaning of what I\u2019m doing, but soon it will be clear to you.\u201d<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%2013%3A1-17&amp;version=TPT#fen-TPT-7989d\">d<\/a>]<\/sup><\/h6>\n<h6><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>Peter looked at Jesus and said, \u201cYou\u2019ll never wash my dirty feet\u2014never!\u201d<\/h6>\n<h6>\u201cBut Peter, if you don\u2019t allow me to wash your feet,\u201d Jesus responded, \u201cthen you will not be able to share life with me.\u201d<\/h6>\n<h6><sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>So Peter said, \u201cLord, in that case, don\u2019t just wash my feet, wash my hands and my head too!\u201d<\/h6>\n<h6><sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said to him,\u00a0\u201cYou are already clean. You\u2019ve been washed completely and you just need your feet to be cleansed\u2014but that can\u2019t be said of all of you.\u201d\u00a0For Jesus knew which one was about to betray him,\u00a0<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>and that\u2019s why he told them that not all of them were clean.<\/h6>\n<h6><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>After washing their feet, he put his robe on and returned to his place at the table.<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%2013%3A1-17&amp;version=TPT#fen-TPT-7994e\">e<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0\u201cDo you understand what I just did?\u201d\u00a0Jesus said.\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cYou\u2019ve called me your teacher and lord, and you\u2019re right, for that\u2019s who I am.\u00a0<sup>14\u201315\u00a0<\/sup>So if I\u2019m your teacher and lord and have just washed your dirty feet, then you should follow the example that I\u2019ve set for you and wash one another\u2019s dirty feet. The sandal is often used in covenants of inheritance in Hebrew culture. Every defilement would be removed so that they could \u201cplace the sole of their feet\u201d upon the new covenant inheritance.
